Maadhyama Aneka is proud to announce the launch of its OTT platform Aneka Plus which offers original content in Kannada and other languages. Aneka Plus is now live and available on Android Playstore, iOS App Store and on website www.anekaplus.com. The audience can expect a wide variety of entertainment content and infotainment content on the OTT.

With the core objective of bringing quality content through its OTT Aneka Plus, Maadhyama Aneka has also been laying the foundation to create and nurture an ecosystem of filmmakers, writers, artists and technicians to produce content for web format. Through Aneka Plus, we intend to bring out home productions as ‘Maadhyama Aneka Originals’ which are carefully and tastefully crafted content with freshness in the concept and storylines. In addition to the in-house productions we also intend to source quality content from other creators as well – so the launch of Aneka Plus also opens up opportunities for creators to experiment with a variety of concepts and produce quality content. The entertainment content will be in Kannada and other languages.

Through this announcement we would also like to invite creators to send us concept proposals for finished products as well as for a ready screenplay/script. The filmmakers and writers can contact the content curators at Maadhyama Aneka with their proposals. The content can be for Web Series and Documentaries.

The OTT platforms have been emerging as the front-runners in the entertainment business since the past 2-3 years. The pandemic situation made way for the OTT platforms to be the best source of entertainment content. The audience are slowly but steadily switching to OTTs for consumption of entertainment content. It is estimated that the revenue earned collectively from OTTs was significantly higher than the revenue earned from showing films in cinema halls during the ongoing pandemic. The OTTs turned out to be the saviour for some filmmakers to monetize their content through various monetization models. The OTT platforms also provide excellent opportunities to young filmmakers and freedom to experiment with variety of concepts and storylines for seasoned filmmakers. However, we are yet to see any prominent regional OTT streaming platform focused on catering to Kannada language original content. The mainstream OTT platforms such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Hotstar are yet to take interest in Kannada. There is clearly a big lacuna for Kannada originals. Maadhyama Aneka sees this as an opportunity in the regional space particularly in Kannada language and hence in 2020 they started putting their focus on creating a roadmap for producing Entertainment content for Web Platforms. The first season of Super Couple series got an excellent response and subsequently season 2 was released in 2021 during the lockdown. The response received by the audiences for both the series was highly encouraging and it demonstrated the market potential for original content in Kannada languages;

Web Entertainment Content in Regional Space

The OTT market in India is seeing the rise of regional language video streaming platforms. In the regional language market space, Bengali, Marathi, Tamil and Telugu language content are emerging as the four leading languages for regional content. Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Hotstar have recently started acquiring and developing regional language content in these languages. SVF Entertainment-backed Bengali OTT platform Hoichoi, launched in 2017, was one of the first movers in the category. Three years on, there are exclusive platforms that stream Telugu, Malayalam and Marathi content. Manorama Max, a Malayalam online entertainment platform online, made its appearance in late 2019. Aha, a platform for Telugu movies and shows, Talkies, a streaming service for Tulu, Konkani and Kannada content, and Planet Marathi, targeting Marathi speakers, were all launched in 2020. Production houses, too, are shifting focus to regional language shows.

Kevin Mayer, who was recently passed over for the top job at Walt Disney Co., is now CEO of TikTok and COO of Bytedance, the Chinese parent company of TikTok. With this major jump in the entertainment industry, Mr. Mayer will now be running one of the world’s most valuable private companies, estimated at $75 billion, and one that boasts more than 700 million global daily active users of its apps.

Mr. Mayer was the chairman of the Disney’s direct-to-consumer and international segment, including Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+, making him one of the highest-profile American executives to move to a Chinese company. Mayer is also leaving Disney after the successful launch of its streaming platform, Disney+, which rolled out in November and now has over 50+ million subscribers.

Mayer who was heading the Disney+ Streaming Business leaves at a fraught moment when Disney is suffering huge revenue losses from the closure of their Disney parks all over the world due to COVID-19 situation.

This major development comes at a time when Bytedance is facing challenges in the U.S., where TikTok’s growing popularity has attracted the scrutiny of American lawmakers concerned that its Chinese roots could lead the app to censor content to appease Beijing or share information with Chinese authorities.

According to reports from research firm Sensor Tower, the TikTok app has been downloaded over 2 billion times on Google Play and Apple Inc.’s App Store since 2017. The first three months of 2020 saw 315 million downloads of TikTok, the most of any app in a single quarter.

Bytedance has played well by bringing in a seasoned American Media Executive as the face of its venture TikTok at a time when it has become imperative to distance itself from its Chinese roots to continue riding the massive growth and to comfortably find its place in the American market.

AI can now ‘Deepfake’ Music: Will Copyright Law Take A New Form?

The music world sat up, shocked, amidst the COVID-19 lockdown when the famous rapper Jay-Z’s company Roc Nation filed a take-down notice against YouTuber Vocal Synthesis. The YouTube channel had created a deepfake video where the popular rapper Jay-Z is seen performing in another rapper Billy Joel’s We Didn’t Start The Fire song and Hamlet’s To Be Or Not To Be. Billy Joel’s persona had been replaced by Jay-Z in the whole music video using artificial intelligence.

With Jay-Z’s deepfake music issue, a gamut of similar synthetic creations is getting attention, raising the quintessential question of copyright infringement, as to where does the copyrights start and where it ends. If Jay-Z is successful in getting the deepfake videos removed from the YouTube channel, then a new legal precedent is being set.

In Jan 2020, it was reported that ByteDance and TikTok had already built their own deepfakes maker, with Tik Tok’s app code referred to it as Face Swap.  Though this technology is yet to be made public the app company is already asking users to take a multi-angle biometric scan of their face, then choose a video where they want to add their face and share.

Speech synthesis is not new for the artificial intelligence world. Powerful machine learning techniques can manipulate or generate visual and audio content with a highly deceptive ‘authenticity.’ These machine learning methods involve training generative neural network architectures such as autoencoders, or generative adversarial networks (GANs). Given a training set it can generate new visual or audio content that look ‘almost’ authentic with many realistic characteristics. From talkbots to real-time speech synthesis, these transformations of text to speech or written content to audio material are being used for several purposes.

Deepfake is the portmanteau of ‘deep learning’ and ‘fake’ – synthetic media in which a person in an existing image or video is replaced with someone else’s likeness. Artificial Intelligence can re-create or duplicate what is already existing, which can be used as a deep fake technology. This deep fake technology has progressed to the point where audio and video are synthesized, or in other words, manipulated to the maximum extent.

As AI tunes and retunes its machine learning, the music world is not spared. The technology already creates, composes, and manufactures synthetic music bytes. All it needs is a data set as a training model, as is seen in Jay-Z’s situation. The algorithms gather and analyze large collections of an artist’s songs, identify patterns in the audio data that humans would correlate with that music style, and then use those patterns as training sets to generate new audio with someone else’s persona as the artist.

The phenomenal growth and progress in AI and machine learning might even make it impossible to identify the original. Or, it can create a new technology to counter the deepfakes, in enabling identification of deepfakes from the originals in real-time. While creating and counter-creating these technologies, it leaves an open-ended question as to how to even identify that a music content has been synthesized at all in the digital universe. As of now, the popularity of the artist has brought the concern to the fore. What would happen when lesser known artist’s unique musical compositions that get uploaded are manipulated and shared online amongst the public is something to ponder. Incidentally, the contentious YouTube channel “Vocal Synthesis” also features videos that are described as ‘entirely computer-generated text-to-speech models trained on the speech patterns.’ One of their featured videos contains speeches of six U.S Presidents, with the same claim of being trained from the speech patterns of those Presidents. If these syntheses efforts are taken a step further, it is not impossible to generate a ‘potential’ message or even an order that is supposedly coming from the President himself. In 2016, fake news was a hurdle in the U.S. elections, but the extent of ruckus that today’s deepfake news could create is simply left to our imagination. Such synthetic creations are going to disrupt politics in a big way. Finding efficient ways to identify deepfakes from original ones would ameliorate the problem, but only after whatever damage is done.

In a recently concluded BARC Connect 2020 – Bengaluru, Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) India, stated that cord-cutting in India is far from reality. On the other hand, studies and surveys have unanimously stated that the new users of OTT platforms will be coming from rural India.

The OTT experience is Tier 1 city centric, the OTT players expect this paradox to expand into the tier-2 and tier-3 cities where televisions hold a major sway. With the rise of regional OTT platforms targeting these cities and the availability of devices like Fire Stick, there is a chance that televisions will be left behind. As per the data from BARC, about 1 million houses in India (rural landscape) do not have a TV of any kind. But the question is, with the kind of Internet penetration that we see in India today, pricing of devices and services considered, will owning a TV for these households be a priority?

BARC claimed that TV viewership was up in 2019 owing to two major cricketing events: ICC Cricket World Cup and IPL. According to them, ICC Cricket World Cup drew an audience of 38 million in India while IPL drew an audience of 37 million in India.

Unique tradition of an Indian family:

Let’s take a look at how an average Indian family watches a cricket match featuring India. During a major tournament – World Cup, Champions Trophy, IPL, and T20 World Cup, rather than isolating themselves with the OTT platforms the family members will get together in front of the TV with a few refreshments to cheer and support the Indian team. It is very rare that members of the family will peel away during a tense and hype-filled match to watch by themselves. Watching a major event on TV is an occasion for the family. Barring such occasions, people today prefer to watch something of their personal choice on their mobile devices.

As per BARC the regional viewership has grown significantly in India. When they did a comparative study between 2018 and 2019, the North-East region of India showed a growth in regional intake along with Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Tamil Nadu. While this presents a bright view for TV audiences, the other parts of India have not seen a rise or drop but a stable rank. Is this because of an incursion of OTT platforms in places like Karnataka, Delhi and West Bengal?

The signs of audience migrating away from televisions is visible. One of the lifelines for the sustenance of TV channels is advertisers, which has shown a shift. Advertisers have identified OTT platforms as their next golden goose as the users are more ad-receptive. Another newest wrinkle is the group of audience who prefer to have a TV connection as well as have access to multiple OTT platforms.

With cheaper Internet connections and mobile devices, people prefer to watch video content online. It is a fact that an ample amount of time will be taken for OTT platforms to replace cable TV and DTH operators completely. An important factor that might play a role in stepping up this metamorphosis of video consumption could be the high monthly bills that some DTH users had to pay after opting for a la carte option by providers.

The Irishman is a story of Frank Sheeran, a truck driver who becomes a hitman involved with mobster Russell Bufalino and his crime family as well as a powerful labor union teamster, Jimmy Hoffa.

Based on a non-fiction book I Heard you Paint Houses by Charles Brandt, it is a fictionalized true crime story about the disappearance of Jimmy Hoffa, a mystery that still has not been solved.

Robert DeNiro who played Frank Sheeran co-produced with the director Martin Scorsese  and Joe Pesci came out of his unofficial retirement to portray the role of the suave mobster Russell Baffalino. Jimmy Hoffa was played by Al Pacino.

The production design was 108 shooting days, 117 locations, 319 scenes, 160 actors in a story spanning 50 years. Scenes were filmed with a custom three-camera rig to create extensive de-aging effects that made the three main actors Robert DeNiro, Al Pacino, and Joe Pesci appear younger.

The planning of the movie started in 2007 itself. But the idea of an aging hitman reminiscing his crime days finalized only in 2017. Tense meetings, setbacks, and a rising budget made The Irishman an epic struggle in the making, with Netflix stepping into financing and distributing it as one of its originals.

The slow reminiscing narrative of the truck driver belies the subtle and deadly half-tone negotiations and whispered hints of the Mob world. A Martin Scorsese signature and must watch gangster movie.

1917 (2019)

The unnerving exceptional first-person experience of WWI that plunges the viewers into the war trenches.

Directed and produced by Sam Mendes, 1917 is an epic war movie set in World War I. Two young British soldiers Lance Corporals Will Schofield and Tom Blake set off to deliver a message that could save 1,600 of their fellow comrades, during Operation Alberich in 1917. This message is personally important to Blake since his brother Joseph is among the threatened regiment.

Lance Corporals Will Schofield is played by George McKay and Tom Blake by Dean-Charles Chapman.

The ideas for a script, which Mendes co-wrote with Krysty Wilson-Cairns, came from a story told by Mendes’s grandfather, Alfred Mendes. Alfred Mendes, a native a Trinidad was a messenger for the British on the Western Front.

The movie is presented in two shots, one that takes place during the day and one after the sun has gone down.

Filming took place in England and Scotland using long takes and elaborately choreographed moving camera shots to give the effect of one continuous shot. This technique aimed to keep the viewer in a propulsive, at times headlong journey that travels like a live fuse.

1917 is tense, captivating, meticulous, horrifying and stirring – an exceptional achievement in filmmaking.

Joker is a compelling origin story of a man’s painful journey to self destruction.

Joker, an American psychological thriller, is a possible origin story for the popular villain character of the DC Comics, Batman. It is directed and produced by Todd Phillips known for Hangover Trilogy, Starsky and Hutch, etc.

Arthur Fleck or the Joker is a poor, mentally ill stand-up comedian, disregarded and mocked by society. He is devoted to his mother who encourages him to see himself as joyous light in the world by bringing laughter to the people. But people’s callous treatment leads him into insanity and turns him violent against the wealthy in the decaying Gotham City. Joaquin Phoenix does a striking justice to the dark complex character with mental illness.

The film received appreciation and equally opposite criticism. Cinematography, costume, and narrative were highly appreciated. Critics raised questions that Joker was full of dangerous ideas that will spur its worst fans to murder, that justified and empathized dark violence.

Seventh highest grossing film of 2019, Joker is the first live action Batman film to receive an R-rating from the Motion Picture Association of America, due to its violent and disturbing content.
